The Chief Instructor of Potomac Aikikai is Asim Hanif. Asim began studying aikido in 1995. He is presently ranked Shodan as certified by Aikikai Hombu Dojo, Japan. He was first introduced to aikido by Irv Faust Sensei (Albany Aikido).

After moving to Virginia in 1996 he became a member of Capital Aikikai under the direction of Clyde Takeguchi Shihan. He has also been privileged to receive instruction from many other high ranking Sensei. 
Prior to aikido, Asim began training in judo and Shotokan karate in 1972. He later earned Nidan in Okinawan karate and won 2 professional titles in kickboxing. In 1991 Asim met Michael Robinson Shihan of Shorei ha Goju ryu and was heavily influenced by his instruction and knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, tai chi/chi gong, and TCM. 

Since 1990 he has trained and managed professional boxers and kickboxers. 
Asim is the owner of East-West Gym & Fitness which specializes in boxing, kickboxing, and aikido for fitness and self defense.
